Not enough pregnant people are getting vaccinated

COVID-19 is dangerous if you’re pregnant. COVID-19 vaccines, which protect against severe COVID-19, are not. Even so, many pregnant people are unfortunately forgoing COVID-19 vaccines. Some of this may be due to misinformation and false, fear-mongering claims online. But some of it is also due to the lack of clear messaging from governments and large medical organizations, because pregnant people were not included in clinical trials for the vaccines. Unfortunately, they generally aren’t. Read more here.

This is important for you because please get vaccinated if you haven’t yet, and encourage your pregnant friends to get vaccinated too. These vaccines are safe and very effective.

COVID-19 related stress on pregnant and postpartum people

A study conducted by Pregistry and colleagues at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health health via an anonymous, online, cross-sectional survey in 64 countries between May and June 2020 revealed that 83% of all study participants indicated that they were either ‘somewhat’ or ‘very’ worried during the pandemic. The study shows a significantly higher worry level among populations residing outside Europe, and in some racial and ethnic communities (Asian, Black, Latin/Hispanic, Mixed Race, South Asian, and others). Different forms of support and stress also had an impact on level of worry. Read more here.

This is important for you because worries may impact your heath and the health of your unborn baby.

Janet Lansbury says don’t worry, you don’t have to do so much

Janet Lansbury is a parenting guru from Malibu. In her podcast, “Unruffled ,” she espouses the idea that “babies, like seeds growing into plants, did not need any teaching to develop as nature intended; they would learn to walk, speak, sleep, self-soothe, and interact perfectly, if only we would get out of their way.” She aims to prepare children to deal with their own emotions, decisions, and lives. This is important for you because she says that enforcing strict boundaries helps kids relax; fortunately, it can help you relax too.

Smart tampons

In her first company, GalMedics,Hilla Shaviv developed a tampon that treats menstrual pain- but alas, it never made it to market. She expanded the technology in her new company, GalsBio, with the Tulipon. It is a combination of a tampon and a menstrual cup. Eventually, she hopes that it will be able to monitor and screen womens’ health from home based on biomarkers within their menstrual fluids. Read more here.

This is important for you because she has odds stacked against her as a woman entrepreneur making a product targeting women’s health–both traditionally underfunded entities–but she is pushing on.
