6 Ways to Avoid the Winter Blues as a New Mom

As a new mom, winter can be a particularly challenging time. The combination of shorter days, dark nights and colder weather can easily leave new moms feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. These so-called ‘winter blues’ are far more common than you may think, but there are some quick and simple ways you can prevent yourself from feeling drained and lethargic during the winter months.

Here are 7 tips to help you avoid the winter blues as a new mom:

1) Get some fresh air

As a new mom with a baby constantly stuck to your breast, it can be all too tempting to stay indoors during the winter. With the cold weather and a distinct lack of sunlight, you may struggle to summon up the energy to even leave the house. However, getting outside, even just for a short while, can prove to be incredibly beneficial for your mental health. A change of scenery, the chance to get some fresh air, and even the smallest boost of Vitamin D can have a really positive effect.

Whether it’s a simple walk around the block with your stroller or a trip to a local nature reserve or park, getting outside every day is a great way to lift your spirits,

One thing to bear in mind – make sure you and your baby dress appropriately, especially in more extreme weather such as snow and ice.

2) Connect with other moms

Being a new mom can at times feel isolating and lonely, especially in the winter months. Whilst it may not come naturally, staying connected with others is important for your well-being. Who better to reach out to than other new moms facing the same new challenges and experiences?

Whether it’s a face-to-face parenting group, chatting in online forums or joining social media groups dedicated to new parents, connecting with other moms can help you feel less alone and provide an invaluable support network.

3) Get some exercise

The thought of exercising in winter might feel like an impossible task – but there are lots of ways to incorporate some gentle exercise into your day. Whilst you may be lacking in energy, some gentle exercise can actually boost your energy levels, helping you feel refreshed and revitalised, even after a disrupted night’s sleep.

From a gentle walk to an online aerobics workout or even some relaxing yoga or Pilates, exercise will provide some much-needed endorphins to get you through even the dullest rainy days.

4) Make time for yourself

As a new mom, you’ve probably forgotten what self-care looks like, but it’s important to make some time for yourself – particularly in winter. Whilst the days of a relaxing child-free spa day may be behind you (for now), you can embrace in some small acts of kindness and give yourself some much-needed me time. From simple tasks like painting your nails or putting on a hair mask, to reading a book in the tub – incorporate some small treats into your day where you can.

5) Plan fun activities

Winter can be a fairly uneventful time for most people – even without a new baby at home. Having something to look forward to can really help provide some much-needed motivation and anticipation during the winter months. Whether it’s booking your first family short break for spring, a trip to the beach, or a nice meal with your mom friends, having something in the diary can provide a little bit of brightness on the horizon. If you have family close by, you could even book a well-deserved date night for some well-needed rest and rejuvenation!

6) Seek professional help if needed

Are you worried that your emotions are more than just winter blues? If you’re finding that you’re feeling down or have lost some lust for life, it’s important to reach out to others and seek professional help. Baby blues are common after childbirth, especially during the winter, but strong feelings of not coping could be a sign of postnatal depression. Talking through your feelings can help identify any further support you may need.
