The genes that gastrulating embryonic cells use

Tissue culture studies have allowed researchers to better understand what happens in very early embryos. But they have little idea of what goes on at a cellular and molecular level just after the embryo implants into the wall of the uterus. This is a vital time, since this is the stage at which many miscarriages occur. At this point the embryo undergoes a process called gastrulation, in which the embryo forms three distinct cellular layers that will give rise to the body’s structures and overall plan. New work has looked at the genes used by 1,195 individual cells from a gastrulating human embryo. It showed that the brain has not started forming yet, but that germ cells (eggs and sperm) and blood cells had. Read more here.

This is important for you because as models of these events are developed, it will be valuable to know what happens in the body to know how accurate these models are.
