One of these things is not like the other

Babies understand not only the meanings of words but the relationships between them and the categories they fit into. And they can do so well before they can verbalize those words. New work demonstrates that babies categorize words when they are as young as six months old. This new awareness may help in the earlier diagnosis of language difficulties. Read more here.

This is important for you because your baby is always listening, and always learning. Talk to her and around her often to improve her vocabulary and understanding.

Breastfeeding may reduce allergies

The pendulum has swung back and forth as to when children should be exposed to allergens in order to prevent them from developing allergies. Now, it seems that while they are nursing may be a good time. Feeding peanuts or shellfish to mice mothers who were nursing their pups seemed to protect the pups from reacting to peanuts or shellfish; human breast milk had the same effect on the mouse pups. This is important for you because IF you do not have a familial risk of allergy, and you are nursing your baby, it probably makes sense for you to make sure you are ingesting these allergens. Check with your doctor.

Is there a midwife in the house?

A new analysis has just shown that the mere presence of a midwife during a hospital birth can reduce the rate of unnecessary medical interventions. Read more here.

This is important for you because midwifery is not a relic from Biblical times – contemporary midwives are modern medical personnel, and may enhance your birth experience.
