Michael Bloomberg has strong opinions about the beverages New Yorkers consume, and he is not shy about making his views known (and trying to turn them into policy). His soda ban never came to pass; but now he is suggesting that formula be locked away, like most other hospital supplies, and not be given to new mothers as a matter of course – only if they request it or they and their baby require it. Hospitals that have already implemented the plan confirm that refraining from offering new moms a convenient formula bottle just after they have given birth – when they are likely to be tired and overwhelmed – does in fact increase the numbers of women who breastfeed their newborns. Those who conduct clinical trials are required by law to register those trials with the government, and are required by law to report all of their results – even the results they didn’t expect or don’t like, like results showing that their drug is not necessarily better than current therapies or that their drug has unanticipated side effects.
