Baby Schumer

Amy Schumer is pregnant with her first. She and her husband announced their big news on Instagram. Read more here.

This is important for you because she thought she was a trainwreck before – wait til motherhood hits her!

Lock it Up

Michael Bloomberg has strong opinions about the beverages New Yorkers consume, and he is not shy about making his views known (and trying to turn them into policy). His soda ban never came to pass; but now he is suggesting that formula be locked away, like most other hospital supplies, and not be given to new mothers as a matter of course – only if they request it or they and their baby require it. Hospitals that have already implemented the plan confirm that refraining from offering new moms a convenient formula bottle just after they have given birth – when they are likely to be tired and overwhelmed – does in fact increase the numbers of women who breastfeed their newborns. Read more here.

This is important for you because if you and your baby can manage it, breast is best. For at least six months.

Clinical Trials

Those who conduct clinical trials are required by law to register those trials with the government, and are required by law to report all of their results – even the results they didn’t expect or don’t like, like results showing that their drug is not necessarily better than current therapies or that their drug has unanticipated side effects. However, not all drug makers follow the rules. Read more, and sign a petition to encourage the FDA to fine these slackers, here.

This is important for you because the exclusion of pregnant women from drug trials is not the only way the system is broken; this is a big step toward fixing it.

Don’t worry, your baby’s American

Trump said he would like to rescind birthright citizenship. But it’s in the 14th Amendment, so it is highly doubtful the Supreme Court would let hem. Read more here.

This is important for you because even if you are not an American citizen, if your baby is born here then it is.

The most popular article on The Pulse this week was What if You Develop Appendicitis During Pregnancy? Pregnancy can mask the symptoms of appendicitis – abdominal pain and nausea – and make the surgery required to fix the condition riskier. Read it here.
