Pregnancy and Lactation Weekly Digest

For the Week Ending August 12, 2018.

Back to School with Beyoncé

Beyoncé talks candidly about her pregnancies and body acceptance, among other topics, in this September’s Vogue magazine. She also graces the cover, which is a pretty big deal; the September issue of women’s fashion magazines, considered the most important one of the year, has traditionally featured white faces on the cover. Read it here.

This is important for you because it’s Beyoncé. Duh.

Just Listen

Alyson Pearson is a therapist who uses lessons gleaned from her teenaged patients to inform how she deals with her three-year-old. She then blogs about her experiences so the rest of us can benefit, too. Her latest post is about the value of validating our kids’ feelings before trying to swoop in and fix their problems. Read it here.

This is important for you because it’s a valuable reminder for most relationships – not just those between parents and children.

Is Bed Rest Best?

Bed rest is one of the most frequently prescribed treatments for pregnant women at risk of preterm birth. Too bad that there is only scant evidence that it works at alleviating that risk – and a lot of evidence indicating that it can be bad for the mother’s short and long-term health. Doctors often prescribe it just to seem like they’re doing something when their options are limited. This is partially because pregnant women have traditionally been barred from clinical studies for ethical reasons; doctors don’t know which treatments are safe because studies to find them have not been permitted. Read more here and here is a great article we published in The Pulse.

This is important for you because if you are prescribed bed rest, it might be worth challenging your doctor to determine what the benefits really are – because the risks are real.

“Mother of Invention”

In her latest short story, Nnedi Okorafur – author of Akata Witch and Akata Warrior – writes about a pregnant woman living alone in a smart house who develops a potentially fatal allergy to her environment. Read it here.

This is important for you because you don’t meet pregnant protagonists of sci-fi stories every day.

The most popular article on The Pulse this week was Increased Appetite in Pregnancy. Remember to eat well when you’re eating for two so you weight gain stays within healthy limits. Read it here.
