Bed rest is one of the most frequently prescribed treatments for pregnant women at risk of preterm birth. Too bad that there is only scant evidence that it works at alleviating that risk – and a lot of evidence indicating that it can be bad for the mother’s short and long-term health. Doctors often prescribe it just to seem like they’re doing something when their options are limited. This is partially because pregnant women have traditionally been barred from clinical studies for ethical reasons; doctors don’t know which treatments are safe because studies to find them have not been permitted.
