A Black Mamas Guide to Living and Thriving

This week, Mamatoto VIllage–a nonprofit dedicated to helping women of color achieve their goals in their careers and other aspects of their lives–released A Black Mamas Guide to Living and Thriving. Download your copy here.

This is important for you because who couldn’t use a guide for living and thriving?

Boris’ Baby Boy

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the UK who just returned to work after a nasty bout of COVID-19, just had a baby boy with his fiance Carrie Symonds. It is his fifth or sixth child. Read more here.

This is not important for you, except, you know, people are still having babies.

Snoo Smart for its own good

The $1,300 Snoo Smart bassinet is connected to the internet, so parents can control its motion and music and monitor their babies over Wi-Fi. But guess who else can control it? Anyone. Read more here.

This is important for you because it is yet another proof of the Adama Principle: if you don’t want something to get hacked by bad guys–your fridge, your doorbell, your bassinet–don’t connect it to the internet. It is named for Admiral Adama of the Battlestar Galactica; he never allowed his ship to be networked, so it was the only one to survive the Cylon attack.

“Daffodil’s Baby”

Arizona State University’ Center for Science and the Imagination has teamed up with Future Tense, a subsidiary of Slate, to publish short stories every month that address how technology can change our lives. The latest, Daffodil’s Baby,  imagines what it would be like if celebrities sold their eggs and sperm so anyone could have a celebrity baby. Read the story here and an analysis of it here.

This is important for you because it reinforces the point that a lot more goes into making a baby, and a person, than genes.

The most popular article on The Pulse this week was COVID-19 in Babies and Children. Read it here.
