Pregistry’s Friday Recipe: Pizza Monkey Bread

Monkey bread – also known as “pull apart bread” – is a delicious treat typically made with pieces of soft dough (pizza, biscuit or bread dough) tossed in butter and seasonings, poured into a bundt pan and baked.

The dough balls rise in the oven and the bread is served by pulling apart the pieces.

Although the classic version of this dish uses sweet ingredients like brown sugar and cinnamon, we’ve created a savory twist – and stuffed each ball of dough with pepperoni and mozzarella!

The sweet components have been swapped out for savory herbs and grated parmesan, and we baked these up in individual muffin tins for a unique and fun presentation!

Pizza Monkey Bread:

  • 1 stick (8 tablespoons) butter
  • 1 teaspoon EACH garlic powder, dried oregano, dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan
  • 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough (containing 8 biscuits)
  • 32 pepperoni slices
  • 8 ounces mozzarella, cut into 32 cubes
  • Pizza or marina sauce, for dipping

Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees; place liners in 8 muffin wells.

Melt the butter in a medium saucepan and stir in the herbs, salt and parmesan. Set aside.

Separate the biscuits and cut each into 4 pieces (for a total of 32). Working with one piece at a time gently pull into a square shape and place a slice of pepperoni and a cube of mozzarella in the center. Bring the dough around to seal and roll into a ball. Repeat with remaining ingredients.

Dip each ball in the melted butter mixture and place 4 balls in each of your prepared muffin liners. Do not discard the remaining butter mixture.

Bake for 15 minutes or till golden brown. Brush tops with reserved butter mixture and serve warm, with pizza or marinara sauce for dipping.
