Pregistry’s Friday Recipe: Hot Cocoa Mix

Ditch the packets! Homemade hot cocoa mix takes all of 5 minutes to assemble and is far and away better than the packaged stuff.  

Six simple pantry ingredients are all you need for the richest, most delicious hot cocoa you’ve ever had. And since it scales up beautifully make a few batches, scoop into pretty jars and give as a unique and welcome gift! You can pair the jars with some fun mugs or a bundle of peppermint stick “stirrers”. 

Just don’t forget the whipped cream.

Hot Cocoa Mix (makes 10 servings; ingredients may be doubled or tripled) :

  • 1 1/2 cups nonfat dry milk powder 
  • 1 cup confectioner’s sugar 
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch 
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 

Place the ingredients onto a sheet of waxed paper, or in a medium bowl. Pour over a strainer that is set over another bowl and sift, using the back of a spoon to press out any lumps. Whisk to combine and transfer to an airtight container. 

To make your hot cocoa, combine 1/3 cup of the mix with 1 cup of hot milk. Serve with whipped cream, marshmallows or peppermint sticks.
