It’s fall, so it’s safe to say that you probably have some apples – maybe even more than “some”.
Between apple picking and fall – and holiday – baking, we’re all chopping, coring and peeling apples on the regular. But don’t throw out those peels!
Instead, toss with some granulated sugar, bake and enjoy the easiest, most delicious treat you’ve ever made with scraps! The peels bake, unattended for several hours in a low-heat oven and come out crisp, crunchy and utterly addictive!
You can flavor the sugar with your favorite fall spices, or use your hands to rub some grated citrus zest in before adding the peels. The possibilities are endless and you can feel great about giving your family this sweet treat!
Apple Peel “Twigs”:
- 1/4 – 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- peels from 4 apples
- optional: spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, or pumpkin pie spice), grated zest from one orange, lime or lemon
Pre-heat the oven to 250 degrees; line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Place the sugar in a large bowl (along with any spices or zest, if using), add the peels and toss to coat well.
Spread peels in a single layer on your baking sheet, making sure no pieces overlap.
Bake for 2½ hours, remove from the oven and let cool completely.
